On 19 March 2026, the Senate Plenary adopted a set of resolutions urging the Government to reinforce efforts aimed at promoting gender equality and strengthening family protection. The resolutions followed the presentation and review of a report by the Committee on Governance and Human Rights.
Among the key recommendations is the need to intensify public awareness of laws related to gender equality and family protection. The Senate also called for stronger nationwide campaigns to address the issue of couples living together without formalising their unions through legal marriage.
Senators acknowledged the significant progress made so far, citing strong political commitment, active citizen participation, and the valuable contribution of development partners in supporting family development programmes.
However, they also highlighted persistent challenges that continue to affect family well-being. These include negative societal mindsets, family conflicts, teenage pregnancies, child malnutrition, weak parental responsibility, and the increasing number of informal unions and divorces.
The Senate emphasised that sustained awareness efforts, effective enforcement of existing laws, and strengthened collaboration among institutions are critical to building resilient families and achieving sustainable national development.
