Committees are smaller groups of Members of Parliament responsible for examining issues in detail before decisions are made by the full chambers.
Committee on Governance and Human Rights
SenateResponsibilities
The Committee on Governance and Human Rights is responsible for monitoring the application of the following fundamental principles:
- equitable power-sharing;
- to build a State governed by the rule of law, a pluralistic democratic government, equality of all Rwandans and between men and women which is affirmed by women occupying at least thirty per cent (30%) of positions in decision-making organs.
In terms of oversight of the Executive action, the Committee on Governance and Human Rights is responsible for:
- Scrutinising reports relating to the referendum and other types of elections;
- Dealing with issues related to territory administration and governance;
- Monitoring the functioning of political organisations and the ethics of politicians;
- Monitoring justice and institutional relations;
- Monitoring the enforcement of criminal legislation, organisation and jurisdiction of Courts and criminal procedures;
- Overseeing the establishment, restructuring, functioning and removal of public institutions.
- The Committee also has a specific responsibility to consider the amendment of the Constitution of the Republic of Rwanda.
